The Foundation supported a variety of activities and organizations at APNIC 56, which took place in Kyoto, Japan between 7 and 14 September.
APNIC Foundation: Supporting the future of Research and Education Networks (RENs)
The Foundation, together with Keio University, held a session which showcased the work of the School on Internet Asia (SOI Asia) project and the Asian Interconnection Initiatives (AI3). SOI Asia and AI3 are run by Keio University with the support of the APNIC Foundation.
Foundation acting CEO Sylvia Cadena gave an introduction to the work of the APNIC Foundation, then the session was handed over to by Keiko Okawa, the Director of SOI Asia, who has been leading the project since its beginning in 2001 as a community for Internet-related educational collaboration among universities in Southeast Asia.
The session covered the history of SOI Asia and AI3, and how they have been working across the different generations of Internet technology to foster connectivity for Research and Education Networks (RENs) and improve disaster resilience in the Asia Pacific region.
Supporting participation from newcomers and seasoned hands
Ninja Tadifa, a participant in the Switch! project, welcomed new attendees to the conference at the newcomers welcome session.
Ninja also spoke at the Nextgen careers session later that day.
A science of Cyber Public Health
The Foundation supports the work of the Cybergreen Institute in their development of a science of Cyber Public Health. Cybergreen Founder Yurie Ito explained how Cyber Public Health works and what it was based on at a session at Technical Session 1 of the conference.
ISIF Asia grantee discusses Starlink
ISIF Asia awardee and grantee for multiple projects involving connectivity in the Pacific, Ulrich Speidel, also spoke about his experiences at the conference with Starlink, as part of Technical Session 2.
Sharing IPv6 deployment knowledge
Two different recipients of ISIF Asia’s IPv6 Deployment grants presented at the IPv6 Deployment session at the conference. Maile Halatuituia presented for the Tonga Communication Corporation, who received a grant in 2022 for their Ucall in IPv6 World project. Munkhbat Gansukh spoke about the experiences of Unitel, who are one of the new 2023 IPv6 deployment grant recipients.
Fostering training in the Asia Pacific
The APNIC Products and Services meeting was a chance to learn about APNIC’s training activities in the Asia Pacific, which are supported by the Foundation.
APNIC’s Infrastructure and Development Director Che-Hoo Cheng gave an update, including information on Retained Community Trainer (RCT) and Internet Exchange Point (IXP) activities that the Foundation supports.
Fostering Cybersecurity via Honeynet projects
Two different Honeynet projects were featured in discussions at the conference and it was a rare change to get staff from the projects together!
APNIC security specialist Adli Wahid, who is working on the Cybersecurity: Honeynet Threat Sharing project, spoke at the APNIC/FIRST/APCERT session.
While later that day, Yevonnael Andrew, a researcher at Swiss German University (SGU) spoke about Swiss German University’s Honeynet project, which has received an ISIF Asia award, as well as grants, including one of the new 2023 grants to assist with IPv6 enablement on the network.
Foundation breakfast gathering
Seizing the opportunity to get Foundation grantees and partners together and networking, the Foundation hosted a breakfast at the event.
