Outstanding Contributions to Digital Development: Code Avengers

Code Avengers

Code Avengers is a recipient of a 2024 ISIF Asia award for Outstanding Contributions to Digital Development for their work boosting digital literacy among students in Samoa. They received their award on September 4, 2024, at the APNIC 58 Conference in Wellington, New Zealand.

Each awardee received travel support (if they are based outside New Zealand) to attend the conference and 5,000 USD to assist with their work.

In 2023, Code Avengers partnered with Bluewave Wireless to launch a groundbreaking digital literacy program in rural Samoa, connecting 10 schools to high-speed internet and providing 111 laptops with three years of data, along with access to the Code Avengers e-learning platform. Sixty-four primary school teachers received ICT capability professional development, empowering them to fully utilize their new connectivity, devices, and resources. Additionally, four local professionals were trained to lead these ICT workshops, ensuring a self-sustaining cycle of professional development within the community.

In just six months, the 10 schools established Digital Technologies programs, engaging nearly 1,000 students from rural areas. These programs continue to thrive today.

With support from Samoa's Prime Minister, Her Excellency Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, Code Avengers and Bluewave Wireless are now planning a national digital literacy initiative to benefit all Samoan communities.
