Software-Defined Internet Exchange Points (award)

Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS)

A winner of the ISIF Asia Awards 2023 is Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) for their work on Software-Defined Internet Exchange (IXP) Points.

Wanting to make Software Defined Networking (SDN) more accessible for smaller IXPs in emerging economies, the LUMS team developed a method to conveniently retrofit IXPs with open source SDN applications. Led by Zartash Afzal Uzmi, the team was able to retrofit an IXP in a lab setting, intended for deployment at a local IXP in the capital city of Islamabad, using their own prototype software package which can help bring down operating costs via automation.

The award was accepted by project lead Dr Zartash Afzal Uzmi.

The 2023 ISIF Asia awards included a grant of USD 5,000 to support their work, as well as covering travel costs to attend the 2023 Internet Governance Forum held in Kyoto, Japan.
