Join APNIC Foundation sessions at the IGF 2023

The Foundation will be organizing or supporting the following sessions at the upcoming Internet Governance Forum (IGF) to be held in Kyoto, Japan, from 8 – 12 October 2023.

​​​​IGF Launch/Award Event #8 ISIF Asia awards 

The 2023 ISIF Awards will recognize three exceptional contributions to Internet development working to advance Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in the Asia Pacific region.

  • Myanmar Internet Exchange (MMIX) for their work on supporting networks in Myanmar – the award is being accepted by project lead Thein Myint Khine. 
  • University of Malaya, for the design, development and operation of an SDN-based Internet eXchange playground for Networkers – the award is being accepted by project lead Dr Ling Teck Chaw.
  • The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) for their work on software-defined Internet Exchange Points – the award is being accepted by project lead Zartash Afzal Uzmi.

Join us in the session to recognize their hard work and learn about the challenges they needed to overcome. The session will also include an update on Foundation activities.

Lightning Talk #174 Switch! – an inclusive approach to capacity building

Through an extensive consultation process, the Switch! project started about three years ago to identify and support women and gender diverse network engineers and cybersecurity professionals across six South East Asia economies. Switch! has supported over 200 individuals from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Timor Leste, The Philippines and Viet Nam to develop their own Professional Development Plans and commit to their learning journey. Main Session: An Untapped Resource: How Can Digital Cooperation Contribute to the Battle for Our Environment? 

The APNIC Foundation is actively participating in the working group behind the preparation of the Main Session event: An Untapped Resource: How Can Digital Cooperation Contribute to the Battle for Our Environment?

Representatives of Foundation-funded activities will be contributing to the discussion, including Dulce Soares, a water engineer with Similie, which the Foundation has been supporting with an ISIF Asia grant. 

​​​​​​Edmon Chung from DotAsia will be moderating the session. The work DotAsia is doing on their EcoInternet Index is an important starting point for this conversation. This contribution is part of the Foundation commitment to raise awareness and provide support to address issues related to the development of the Internet and its impact on the environment. ​

Day 0 event #84: Agents of inclusion: Community networks and media meetup

This session will focus on practical discussions around community networks. APNIC Foundation grants management lead Ellisha Heppner will join the discussion, and the session will be moderated by Sarbani Belur, from the Institute for Social Entrepreneurship in Asia (ISEA) who are recipients of an ISIF Asia grant.

Foundation partner and grantee activities

Bridging Connectivity Gaps and Harnessing e-Resilience

ISIF Asia grantee CVISNET has been working to improve connectivity in disadvantaged or disaster-prone regions of the Philippines. They will be participating in Networking Session #104 on bridging connectivity gaps.

Philippines telco CVISNET has been the recipients of three different grants from the Foundation. The first was in 2016, for their participation in a project to test the Movable and Deployable Resource ICT Unit (MDRU), which provides connectivity in disaster situations.

Dr. Toshikazu Sakano, Director of the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute (ATR), the inventor of the MDRU will also be in attendance. The MDRU would later go on to become Locally Accessible Cloud System (LACS) and CVISNET deployed it after Typhoon Rai, in another Foundation-supported project. CVISNET is also working to improve the connectivity of Islands around Cebu in the Philippines.

Lightning Talk #15 DIY mesh network kit

The DIY COW kit is an ISIF Asia-supported project by Janastu Servelots which provides a kit that remote communities can activate to get connectivity. This talk will discuss the various aspects of a DIY community network kit. The talk will focus on how the kits were made adaptable by local communities during and after community network deployment in a way that is inclusive of all – not limited to significantly literate community members.
