The 11th Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF Asia) Awards were held on September 4, 2024, at the APNIC 58 Conference in Wellington, New Zealand. The 2024 awards focused on work that positively impacted the Internet in the Pacific region. There were nine awardees, across three categories of award.
Each awardee received travel support (if they are based outside New Zealand) to attend the conference and 5,000 USD to assist with their work.
Outstanding Research in Digital Development
A winner of the ISIF Asia Award for Outstanding Research in Digital Development was Victoria University of Wellington (NZ). The award was for research into Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), and was accepted by Professor Winston Seah.
A winner of the ISIF Asia Award for Outstanding Research in Digital Development was University of Waikato / Searchlight (NZ) for research into open source Open Lawful Intercept. The award was accepted by Richard Nelson.
A winner of the ISIF Asia Award for Outstanding Research in Digital Development was the University of Newcastle for their research into cybersecurity attacks on Software Defined Networking (SDN) switches.
Outstanding Contributions to Digital Development
A winner of the ISIF Asia Award for Outstanding Contributions to Digital Development was Bluewave Wireless (Samoa) for their efforts connecting remote communities of Samoa. The award was accepted by Lenora Leota.
A winner of the ISIF Asia Award for Outstanding Contributions to Digital Development was Code Avengers (New Zealand / Samoa) for their work on digital literacy in Samoa. The award was accepted by Damon Khan.
A winner of the ISIF Asia Award for Outstanding Contributions to Digital Development was the Tongan Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT Tonga) for their work protecting Tongan Internet users online.
A winner of the ISIF Asia Award for Outstanding Contributions to Digital Development was Boom! Inc (Micronesia) for their work connecting the Federated States of Micronesia. The award was accepted by Lubuw Falanruw.
A winner of the ISIF Asia award for Outstanding Contributions to Digital Development was SATSOL (Solomon Islands) for their work connecting the Solomon Islands. The award was accepted by Jason Lamani.
Outstanding Community Service
The winner of the ISIF Asia Award for Outstanding Community Service, was Jon Brewer, for his extensive work across decades in wireless technologies and the efforts he put in training the next generation of network specialists and engineers.
The Foundation congratulates the 2024 winners and hopes they continue their good work supporting Internet development throughout the Pacific.
