FCA: Facilitating LTE equipment donation to Samoa 2024
Telco2
This arrangement emerged out of discussions between two ISIF Asia grantees who discovered there was an opportunity: ISPs Telco2 and Primo Broadband, both in New Zealand, had changed the spectrum they used, meaning some of their equipment was no longer necessary.
That same equipment could be put to good use by another ISIF Asia grantee, Bluewave Wireless, in Samoa. This funding facilitated sending that equipment from New Zealand to Samoa.
Further information:
Two New Zealand operators (Primo Broadband and Telco2) build LTE fixed Wireless networks in New Zealand using the 2.6 GHz spectrum band and equipment from US manufacturer Cambium. While the networks perform as expected, there is not enough 2.6 spectrum available in New Zealand for the equipment to be used to its fullest potential. The ISPs using the equipment have, working with their distributor, switched to equipment from the same manufacturer in the 3.3 GHz spectrum band. This has left expensive, high quality used and brand new equipment needing a home.
This small project helps to ship this equipment to Bluewave Samoa, where it can be used to support hundreds of people.
